Guide

Set up Eloqium and learn what its controls do.

The guide follows the names used in the Android application. Start with installation if you are new to Eloqium, or use the section links to find a particular setting.

01 · Installation

Install the app and make Eloqium the preferred TTS engine.

Android’s engine selection and Eloqium’s own settings are separate parts of the initial setup.

  1. 01

    Download and install the APK

Download the current release APK from the Download page. Install the file on a supported Android device and open the Eloqium application.

  2. 02

    Select Eloqium TTS

On the Eloqium home screen, open System TTS Settings. In Android’s text-to-speech settings, select Eloqium TTS as the Preferred Engine.

  3. 03

    Open Eloqium settings

Return to Eloqium and open Eloqium settings. You can then select a language and voice profile and adjust any other controls you want to change.

02 · Voice

Choose a regional language and voice profile.

The application separates language selection from the voice profile, allowing the same set of named presets to be used across the supported regional variants.

Choose a voice profile

In Voice → Voice profile, choose one of the available voice presets. Your selection determines the voice profile used for synthesis within the selected regional language.

Set the language

Open Language & Audio → Language and choose the regional language variant you want Eloqium to use. The Force language switch can be enabled when Eloqium should use that configured language rather than following another language request from the calling application.

Change speech rate

Use Speech rate to choose a relative rate from -10 to +10. Enable Force rate when your configured value should take precedence over the rate supplied by an application. Unlock maximum rate extends the upper range available to the forced rate setting.

Change pitch

Use Pitch for a relative pitch adjustment. Enable Force pitch when Eloqium should use your configured pitch rather than a pitch value supplied by the calling application.

Change volume

Enable Force volume to apply Eloqium’s relative digital gain setting to the synthesized audio. Android’s system playback volume remains responsible for the final output level.

Adjust voice character

Under Voice Characteristics, use Inflection, Head size, Roughness, and Breathiness when you want to change the character of the selected voice beyond ordinary rate and pitch adjustments.

03 · Speech controls

Understand the Force switches before changing them.

A Force switch is useful when the application making the Android TTS request should not be allowed to replace the corresponding Eloqium setting.

Force rate

When Force rate is off, Eloqium maps the speech-rate value supplied by the calling Android application. When it is on, Eloqium maps the value you selected under Speech rate. Unlock maximum rate determines whether the forced rate can use the extended upper range.

Force pitch

When Force pitch is off, the pitch requested by the calling application is used. When it is on, the configured Pitch value is used instead.

Force volume

When Force volume is off, Eloqium leaves the PCM buffers unmodified for digital gain. When it is on, the selected Volume value scales the synthesized 16-bit PCM samples before they are supplied to Android’s audio stream. Increasing this value can raise the digital signal level, but it does not bypass the device’s normal multimedia volume control.

ECI Voice Tags

ECI Voice Tags determines whether compatible inline voice and control annotations using Eloqium’s supported backquote pattern are allowed through the text-processing path. Leave this enabled when an application deliberately sends those tags; otherwise the setting can remain at its default.

04 · Text Processing

Configure the way written text is prepared for speech.

These controls are especially useful for screen-reader output, technical text, documents, and messages containing symbols or structured numbers.

Process punctuation

Enable Process punctuation when you want selected punctuation marks to be spoken by name. Then choose Punctuation level from None, Some, Most, All, or Custom. None leaves punctuation in the ordinary phrasing path. Some speaks a core set of symbols. Most adds structural punctuation such as brackets, quotation marks, dashes, colons, and semicolons. All additionally speaks periods, commas, question marks, and exclamation marks. Custom lets you choose the characters to verbalize.

Number processing

Enable Use number processing when you want multi-digit sequences grouped before synthesis. Smart selects formatting based on the context of the number and supported patterns. Digits separates each digit, Pairs groups from the left in pairs, and Triplets groups from the right in threes.

Capital indication

Configure how uppercase letters are vocalized. None preserves standard speech. Pitch raise raises the pitch only for standalone uppercase one-letter words, such as A or I. Say capital speaks “capital” before the letter.

Abbreviations

Enable Use abbreviations to expand supported forms from Eloqium’s built-in abbreviation dictionary. This includes common titles, address abbreviations, and several frequently used textual abbreviations.

Emoji and emoticons

Emoji / Emoticon enables spoken descriptions for supported emoji and a defined set of ASCII emoticons. The processor protects text patterns that are likely to be URLs, times, ratios, paths, or code expressions.

Intonation pauses

Intonation pauses controls the pause-processing mode used around punctuation. With the setting enabled, the normal pause-preserving path is used. With it disabled, additional pause markers are inserted during chunk preparation.

Phrase prediction

Phrase prediction is enabled by default. The application can configure this behavior, and the enabled path adds the OpenEVV pp1 control information during chunk preparation.

05 · User Dictionary

Create pronunciation and replacement rules.

The User Dictionary system can contain several named dictionaries, each associated with a regional language.

Under User Dictionary, make sure the dictionary system is enabled. Open Dictionaries to create and manage named dictionaries for the active regional language.

A TEXT entry replaces the matching source text with another text string. A PRONUNCIATION entry supplies a phonetic pronunciation instead. Each entry can use Exact match, Starts with, Ends with, or Contains matching and can be configured as case-sensitive or case-insensitive.

When several rules overlap, Eloqium uses deterministic precedence so that longer and more specific rules are considered before broader ones. The replacement pass is non-cascading, so a newly produced replacement does not become input for another dictionary rule in the same pass.

Use the Dictionary page for the complete matching descriptions and information about JSON and IBM .dic files.

06 · Language & Audio

Choose the language behavior and sampling rate.

Language controls affect which regional language Eloqium uses for synthesis requests; sampling rate controls the rate of the native audio output.

Force language

Enable Force language when you want Eloqium to use the language selected under Language instead of following a different language request from the calling application.

Sampling rate

The Sampling rate setting provides seven supported rates: 8,000 Hz, 11,025 Hz, 16,000 Hz, 22,050 Hz, 32,000 Hz, 44,100 Hz, and 48,000 Hz. The default value is 11,025 Hz. This setting changes the sample rate used by the native synthesis path; it is not an Android device compatibility requirement.

07 · Advanced

Eloqium foreground service

Foreground-service settings can improve reliability during background speech.

Background reliability

The Eloqium foreground service section provides controls intended to improve speech reliability when Eloqium runs in the background, particularly on devices with restrictive background process management.

App notifications

Shows whether notifications are allowed and opens system notification settings. The foreground service uses an ongoing notification while active to indicate that the service is running.

Show persistent notification

When enabled, keeps a notification visible in the notification shade while the foreground service is active.

Battery optimization

Shows current battery optimization status (Unrestricted or Optimized) and provides a shortcut to Android's battery settings. Battery optimization behavior is controlled by Android and device manufacturers and may differ between devices.

08 · Reset

Restore the application’s default settings.

Open the Reset category and choose Reset all settings to the default. Eloqium will restore the stored configuration values to their initial defaults.

If Android continues using a different TTS engine, return to System TTS Settings and confirm that Eloqium TTS is selected as the Preferred Engine. If an application requests a language or voice that you do not want to follow, review the relevant Force setting in Eloqium’s configuration.
